Brothers Ashish and Anish Patel and their good friend Chau Ma had a “light bulb” moment in early 2021 when they decided to start their own compounding pharmacy.
“We knew we could provide better customer service than anywhere else, and we knew we could make compounded (custom-created) medications more affordable than other places,” Anish says.
Together, the three pharmacists have nearly a half century of compounding experience. Ashish and Chau worked for private compounding pharmacies, and Anish worked for a hospital in an IV lab. They all wanted more control in their careers, but they knew in order to accomplish their goal, they needed financing to construct a compounding lab, which requires specialized air flow and air filtration.
Ashish’s father-in-law recommended they contact Chris Sarver, vice president and business banking team lead at National Bank of Arizona. That connection proved to be just what they needed to jumpstart their business. Sarver assisted them in securing an SBA loan that included a construction portion for their own building in Scottsdale near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and 114th Street, as well as a mortgage and operating capital. In January 2022, Epiphany Compounding opened their doors to the public.
The biggest part of the business is devoted to custom-created hormone replacement medications. They also produce specially formulated dermatological products to treat aging skin, acne and other conditions, and topical antibiotics to treat wounds that aren’t healing. Doctors prescribe the medications, but unlike prescriptions filled at a commercial pharmacy, those written for a compounding pharmacy can be customized to include almost any ingredient the doctor would like in the medication.
