In February, NB|AZ volunteers participated in the bank’s 7th annual Junior Achievement Day, an event showcasing a strong commitment to financial literacy and community engagement. Held at Irene Lopez Elementary School, a Title I school in south Phoenix, NB|AZ provided two volunteers for every classroom, spanning from kindergarten to 3rd grade. Through various activities and lessons, volunteers helped enrich the students’ understanding of financial concepts.

Nicole Garcia, VP and branch manager at Gainey Ranch, has been with NB|AZ for a little more than two years, bringing 18 years of banking experience. Originally from Hawaii, her passion for teaching and love for children made her a perfect fit for the Junior Achievement (JA) event.

“I participated with Junior Achievement throughout my career at other institutions,” she says. “When I saw our volunteer group at the bank partnered with JA, I jumped right on it. I love the purpose of the organization.”

The event aimed to teach students about such financial concepts as needs versus wants, earning, saving, spending, taxes, and their impact on communities. Garcia emphasizes the importance of starting financial education early on.

“Money is something that you come into contact with at any age. It’s crucial that kids are influenced by what older people teach them about saving and spending,” she explains.

Miriam Robles, bilingual education manager at Junior Achievement, highlighted the partnership with NB|AZ, emphasizing the impact of their volunteers. “One in five JA alumni work or have worked in the same field as their volunteer,” she says, adding that this statistic showcases the profound influence volunteers have on students’ career paths.

At Irene Lopez Elementary, 17 NB|AZ volunteers engaged students with interactive lessons, making financial concepts accessible and enjoyable. “We utilize a workshop model to keep lessons engaging and hands-on,” Robles explains. “The students, many from underprivileged backgrounds, embraced the opportunity to learn about money management.”

The partnership extends beyond JA Day, as NB|AZ has established lasting relationships with schools like Irene Lopez. “The community connections go a long way,” Robles continues. “The bank held a backpack drive for the school, showcasing their ongoing support.”

Garcia’s and Robles’s insights demonstrate the profound impact of NBAZ’s involvement in Junior Achievement. The volunteers not only educate students, but also inspire future financial professionals. Through partnerships like these, NB|AZ continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of Arizona’s youth.
